What would I have done if you had loved me?

What would I have done if I had you?

Oh! What would I have done?

What would I have done with my heart

Lost, adrift in your heart?

What would I have done with your eyes?

Even today your eyes follow me through

The profundity of my feeling

Loving you was such a splendid responsibility

But then, what would I have done if you had loved me?

Without rules to follow

I would have mixed myself in your scent

Yes, in your scent, you and I would have mixed

My fingers, like candles kindling on your skin

Candles on your skin, yes, my fingers kindling

But then, facing my incomprehensible feeling

I can’t say if you had loved me I would have been a hero

Swimming in turbulent seas to reach the ship that carried you

Sailing far. Farther away

Towards horizons God has not yet created

Swimming in your body, looking desperately for an island

Within you

To look at my image in the mirror of life

Oh my! I do know now what I would have done

If you had loved me

I would have succumbed in your bones

And I would have grown small, smaller, smallest

A child weeping in your breast

Defenseless, hungry, squalling hard

And you would have appeased me in your arms

Breastfed me while singing lullabies

And smiled with the smile of an angel

Because you would have given life.
