On a Happy, Long-Lasting Marriage

The secrets of a long-lasting, happy marriage are space and distance. You will have a happy life together if you respect each other’s space and distance. Marriage is like a delicate clock where every gear turns in rhythm and harmony and fits together at the exact time, thus moving forward in balance every moment, every day, every year. The other pieces of this clock are patience, respect, love, comprehension, and forgiveness.

Moreover, I suggest you never forget the first moments of your relationship. Keep those moments alive and even more alive in times of crisis. Do not demand each other too much love or attention. Instead, strive for the balance of the relationship in the silence of God.

It is my hope that you enjoy a long-lasting, happy marriage, and so, as a gift for you, I leave you with these words of wisdom from Kahlil Gibran:

You were born together, and together, you should be forevermore.

You shall be together when the white wings of death scatter your days.

Ay, you shall be together even in the silent memory of God.

But let be spaces in your togetherness,

And let the winds of the heavens dance between you.

Love one another, but make not a bond of love:

Let it rather be moving sea between the shores of your souls.

Fill each other’s cup but drink not from one cup

Give one another of your bread but eat not from the same loaf.

Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone,

Even as the strings of a lute are alone though they quiver with the same music.

Give your hearts, but not into each other keeping.

For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts

And stand together yet not too near together

For the pillars of the temple stand apart,

And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other’s shadow.
